Sustainable hoodia to secure supply, lower prices

By Jess Halliday

21/02/2007 - The Afriplex hoodia cultivation programme is yielding its first harvest this year and is expected to significantly increase supply of plant material available to meet growing demand from the weight management market.

Hoodia gordonii, a plant that grows wild in the area stretching from the Ceres-Karoo, through the Northern Cape, to the Kalahari, has been consumed by the bushmen for thousands of years to suppress appetite on hunting trips.

Research into its appetite suppressing properties and the isolation of the active ingredient P57, (which has been patented and is under license to Unilever) has spawned immense interest in the plant in the West. As appetite management gains credence as an approach to weight management, demand has exceeded supply.

Hoodia Commercial Cultivation

Hoodia Commercial cultivation has started. In a couple of years we will see more hoodia comming from commercial cultivation projects.

In various articles along this site, we have cited Hoodia Gordonii is a natural plant -in fact, a succulent, not a cactus- growing wild in the Kalahari and Namib deserts.

With the hoodia market growing at a large pace year after year, most laboratories manufacturing hoodia products, needs to have a reliable supply of the product.

As the wild product collected in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana has severe restrictions to be traded, mostly because hoodia gordonii is included into the endagered species to be protected by CITES, the hoodia commercial cultivation has become a reality.

Growing Hoodia at Home

Growing Hoodia at Home?

Well, your intention is good. This is a simplistic and natural way to expect to reduce your weight.

Growing hoodia seeds at home and to have the own hoodia cactus supply sounds great.

You will need to find authentic hoodia gordonii seeds, have full sun, well drainage and care too much about watering.

The only problem is that you will need from 5 to 7 years to mature the plant, depending mainly on climate conditions where you live. Hoodia seeds are also very expensive today.

You don´t have to wait such time to lose weight. Simply buy real and pure hoodia products available now on this site.
