The world is certainly a curious place with amazing and incredible circumstances happening every day. The hoodia story is one of them.

It is into the developed and industrialized nations where actually we find one of the largest battles the man has embraced to: the fight against obesity. There are about 300 million people worldwide rated as overweight or obese. And the fight is going on, but the final victory is perhaps some years ahead.

By the other side, in the developing world, we find the other largest battle, and it is against the hunger. Accordingly to United Nations agencies, near 852 million people accross the globe are hungry. Here also the battle is going on and the victory is still far away. The largest population with hunger problems is in the Sub Saharan countries in Africa.

But is in Africa where a simple plant, the hoodia gordonii, is starting to emerge as a solution for both sides. It is what I call the Hoodia paradox.

The hoodia goordonii is a succulent which originally grows wild in the Kalahari and Namib deserts in Southern Africa, in certain areas of South Africa, namibia, Angola and Botswana. The hoodia gordonii is a plant having a molecule which suppress appetite.

The hoodia pills made a revolution in the weight loss market in just 3 years, being today at the top of the consumer demand for dieting products. Why?: because hoodia works!!

The African Hoodia Gordonii

The Hoodia gordonii has an habitat in Southern Africa. In the Kalahari desert it is found in wild conditions. That is, the most valued hoodia gordonii is the african hoodia gordonii.

Today, various companies are producing african hoodia gordonii in commercial plantations, mostly in South Africa. Yet in Namibia and Zimbabwe, the african hoodia gordonii sold is wild hoodia gordonii. All those hoodia must have CITES export certificates to be sold to worldwide importers.

But the question is: Is the african hoodia gordonii the only one hoodia to be sold?

If we look from the quality viewpoint, the answer is yes.

However, in fact it is just a marketing answer. Because, in order to make a comparison, aloe vera or aloe socotra -other succulent plant very known by the consumers into the weight loss, nutrition and health food market- should only have to be cultivated in Africa or Socotra.

But the reality is that, even when aloe is native to Africa, today the main plantations are out of Africa, in Mexico, Venezuela and the quality is exactly the same or better.
