Hoodia Gordonii

The Hoodia Gordonii plant grows in the Kalahari Desert region of Southern Africa and although it looks like a cactus it is categorized as a succulent. Hoodia Gordonii is its latin botanical name. The Hoodia Gordonii plant grows wild in the harsh conditions of the Kalahari desert in Southern Africa. But now, with an increased demand, Hoodia Gordonii is produced in commercial cultivation projects mainly in South Africabeing Afriplex one of the largest hoodia gordonii private growers.
The San tribes people of the Kalahari desert have been eating Hoodia Gordonii cactus for centuries to reduce hunger and thirst on long hunting trips of several days duration. 
As both food and water remains a scarce resource in the Kalahari desert, they used the Hoodia Gordonii to eat and drink.
The Hoodia Gordonii is a wild succulent plant, protected by CITES, an international convention to protect trade in endangered flora species. But commercial cultivation of the Hoodia Gordonii cactus started only a few years ago, driven by the need for a natural slimming aid that actually works.
