Calcium Pyruvate - Basic Description
What is Pyruvate?
Pyruvate is a form of pyruvic acid, a substance manufactured by the body that participates in the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) ATP is an important biological energy source. Pyruvate can also be found in foods such as red apples, dark beer and red wine.
Health Benefits
Studies of obese individuals who took pyruvate in addition to an exercise program showed significantly more fat loss than the control group. Additionally, animal studies have found pyruvate to help ward off insulin resistance in rats, though it is not yet known if this benefit also applies to humans.
Some research indicates that pyruvate may enhance exercise endurance, however there are conflicting studies. More research is needed.
Usage Indications
The recommended supplemental dose of pyruvate is 5-6g per day.
Pyruvate is available in capsule, tablet and powder form.
- Side Effects: Gastrointestinal discomfort is common in extreme doses.
- Indications: Pregnant/nursing women should not use supplemental pyruvate. Consult your physician before using this supplement if you are taking any other drugs or medications.
