Aloe vera is one of the great gifts from Mother Nature.

Aloe vera is one of the few plants used and used by centuries and by different civilizations to help, cure and protect people all over the world. Even so, other varieties are growing in popularity because of specific usages, as aloe saponaria for heart diseases or aloe arborescens for tumoral treatment. In the Far East the aloe chinesis is widely used, whereas in some Western countries the aloe ferox products are highly used as laxatives. Aloe perryi, aloe socotra or aloe secundiflora are also the raw material for certain products.

The Aloe is a plant with more than 360 varieties and presents several origins.

The Aloe Vera is native of the Mediterranean region in the South of Europe and the North Africa, whereas the Aloe Ferox, the Aloe Saponaria and the Aloe Arborescens are original of southern Africa.

The knowledge of the the aloes and the succulents goes back to the antiquity. In the most remote times the virtues of the Aloe in East and the Mediterranean were already known.

The attractiveness of Cleopatra is attributed to the use of the gel of aloe and it also tells that Aristotle advised to Alexander Magno who before initiating the Eastern campaign, conquered the island of Socotora to provide itself with Aloe with which to cure the wounds of its troops in the combat.

The Aloe has been used from remote times for the treatment of diverse ailments. Actually it has begun to be a product of great relevance in the trade of the United States, Europe, Japan and China.

In addition to his medicinal uses it is used in cosmetics, foods, beverages, hygiene and cleaning products.

In the United States is used in all type of cosmetics, emollients, lotions, shampoos, conditioners and soap, sometimes in combination with other fragrances.

In European countries, it is very common to drink aloe juices or aloe yoghourts, besides the frequent use of many cosmetics with pure aloe. Aloe is being used in shampoosand conditioners for humans and pets. Many new foods and beverages are using aloebecause it isconsidered a functional food.

The five main species natural or cultivated of aloe, used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, beauty, toiletry, food and beverages industries are:

• Aloe Vera (Barbadensis Miller)
• Aloe Saponaria
• Aloe Arborescens Miller
• Aloe Ferox
• Aloe Perryi

In the United States and United Kingdom, the Aloe vera has been and is studied and used; whereas in Japan the Aloe arborescens miller and the Aloe saponaria are also relevant.

Pharmaceutical
Aloe and Aloin are used in numerous product formulations into the pharmaceutical industries.

Cosmetics
Aloe gel is used in many products such as shampoos, conditioners, hand creams, facial creams, body creams, after sun moisturizers, anti acne creams, spa products, and others.

Toiletry Industry
In toiletries, the aloe is used in the production of liquid soap and solid soap, deodorants, antiperspirants, cleansing creams, night creams, bath gel and gel for hands and body cleaning.

In hygienical products, it is mainly used in environmental, bactericidal deodorants and like protector in diapers for babies and adults. In products for the cleaning, it is used mainly in detergents, cleaners of baths, deodorants for baths, tablets for toilets, among others.
